Why and How to get rid of a big belly in 2022

Of course, we are not going to dramatize. Having a little fat on your abs is absolutely not serious. Many athletes, including professionals, have them. You may have followed Roland Garros or Wimbledon and if you've seen Serena Williams you know what I'm talking about 😉

When I talk about big belly, I am mainly referring to the one that is dangerous to health. Because the consequences of visceral fat are significant, even serious.

Problems associated with a protruding belly

It's not just the aesthetic aspect that counts. A belly that is too big can cause, among other things:

  • Pain in the lower back and deformation of the spine due to the heavy weight of the belly itself;
  • Amount of internal fat dangerous to the health of the organs;
  • Significant risk of cardiovascular disease.

This is without taking into account the gaze of others or the difficulties in having even moderate physical activity.

The worst part is that it also affects people who have had a good sporting activity in the past. A few days ago, a reader expressed her frustration to me. She wrote to me:

How did that big belly get there?

Many people who have gained weight over the years blame their metabolism or genetics. “I got that from my father or my mother” they say to themselves, “I can't help it”.

Of course, certain external parameters come into play, but you would be wrong to give them too much importance. This is not the main problem.

The real role of metabolism

On average, your basal metabolic rate (the amount of calories you burn just to be alive) accounts for 70 % of total calories burned.

In this quantity, 85 % of these calories are those consumed by your muscles. Your metabolism therefore undeniably depends on the amount of muscle that you have.

That's why bodybuilders have to spend their time eating (apart from training, of course).

It is true that the metabolism can decrease with age, especially after 50, due to a muscular phenomenon called sarcopenia.

We actually tend to lose muscle volume over time, regardless of our level of training.

This is how an athletic body often ends up looking like a Flanby over time, and a nice belly showing.

Why the swollen belly

But the 3 main reasons for a prominent belly are these:

  • You burn fewer calories. Of course, exercise is not the main way to lose weight. Diet plays an even more determining role. However, if you were a former athlete, for example, and you still eat so much without exercising, fat accumulates inexorably.
  • You consume more calories. As we age, we often have more savings or more disposable income, and we indulge ourselves with food. Without forgetting the small restaurants on the right and on the left. And poof! It falls gently on the belly 😉
  • Another more surprising reason, is that you may have resumed weight training when you were fat. In fact, your muscles, especially your abs, may have grown even though you haven't yet eliminated the fat. When I was in my 40s and started building muscle again, everyone said to me, “Ah, you’ve been gaining muscle lately!” It's not the best encouragement, but it was true. Since my abs are quite bulky, it made my belly pop. It's too bad !

So, all that to say that excess fat has little to do with your metabolism or your genetics, but everything to do with the changes that take place in your life over time.


How to get rid of your big belly?

In theory, nothing could be simpler. Just reverse the trend. In practice, it still requires effort when you have settled into a certain routine over time.

Often, people who have a fairly prominent belly also have a certain amount of muscle underneath (and I'm not talking about sumos…).

In fact, the easiest way to get rid of it is to

  1. Calculate the amount of calories you need every day.
  2. Increase the share of protein in your diet.

Of course, you have to accompany all this with a good training, favoring bodybuilding, because don't forget that the muscles are the first consumers of calories.
